This grows on the doorstep of Second Chef’s parents’ place.

This, is a yellow pohutukawa southern rata. I’ve never heard of one of these, let alone seen one.

It might be an albino.

“An occasional yellow-flowered specimen can be found in Otira and Westland” J. T Salmon (1991) Native New Zealand flowering plants.
I’ve never seen one either.
The pohutukawa in our back yard has red flowers but variegated leaves (mostly yellow)

yeah, the wikipedia pages says that it is most probably a southern rata, which occasionally bloom yellow or white!
nice. probably the *only* time i’ve ever distinguished a rata from a pohutukawa!

I’ve always thought the southern rata was a much darker red – but hey I’ve never seen them side-by-side

I’ve not seen one either, but understood they were about. Great shot but.
The Rata’s an epiphyte yeah?

@art @paul, according to the wikipedia article the southern rata is a tree-proper and not always an epiphyte, and is *rarely* yellow.
guess we have a treasure on our hands!

I thought that rata have an orangey-red flower, and pohutukawa a crimsony-red flower. (Aside from the rare yellow rata, that is.)

The Southern rata and northern rata are a slightly different colour I think (normally red). Also the Northern rata is an epiphyte while the southern rata grows from seed.
