Nice story here with the students complaining about their debts.
A. Bunch. Of. Whingers.
I did live on bread and water. And I’m still paying off my debts. Your education is still tens of thousands of dollars cheaper than places overseas, get on with it, get out, and get to paying the debt back. Simple.

I agree! I, for one, would be severely pissed off if debt was wiped given the effort I made to pay mine back.
I think greater attention should be paid to increasing the living portion of the loan if anything. It was $150 a week when I borrowed and as far as I know that hasn’t changed to keep pace with living costs.
Another issue is whether students are considering what they are exchanging their debt for. Is there any point in getting in debt for a PHD in History if you are going to be unemployable at the other end. And I don’t want to exclude studying for its own sake. There is much to be said for it, but there should also be some thought put into what one is going to do afterwards.

dunno. sometimes life experience through education is useful.
the question to me is whether you think the state should support you in that choice…
most of these little oiks should just go get a job. instead of drinking in a pub on fridays, work in one!

We used to have a Prime Minister (dear Tony) who said that he wanted 50% of the school population to go through university! Wouldn’t it be wonderful if 50% of the school population could read and write intelligently and in a well articulated manner!
In my day, if your lecturer could not read your writing, you got ‘nil points’ so we had to make sure he, or she, could!
Didn’t leave a lot of time for whinging!
